Mill Road Traders Association - 10 Point Objectives (2025–2027)
Introduction
The Mill Road Traders Association (MRTA) represents the independent spirit of Cambridge’s most diverse and dynamic high street.
Our aim is simple:
“To work together for a thriving Mill Road - to support local traders, welcome visitors, and nurture a vibrant community for everyone who calls this place home.”
1. One Voice for Traders

Ensure every member is represented and heard.

Launch a digital membership system

Recruit community ambassadors for Petersfield & Romsey.
2. Revive the Local Economy

Work closely with City & County Councillors, BID, Mayor PB and MP DZ and other local and national representatives.

Explore a review of business rates.

Work with the local authority for footfall and economic data to evidence Mill Road’s value.

Explore “Shop Local, Eat Local” campaigns and similar campaigns to boost trade.

Explore digital loyalty schemes for Mill Road.
3. Beautiful & Accessible Streets

Work with Highways to help maintain and repair Mill Road i.e repaint white/yellow lines and crossing, etc.

Consider more zebra crossing for Mill Road for safer access, slow down cars speeding, and help maintain 20mph.

Install flowers, planters, and improved lighting to enhance the street.

Review pavements, bike stands, and accessibility for all users work with stakeholders
4. Rethink Transport & Parking

Discuss with the Council to explore a Park & Ride route through Mill Road for better visitor access and help increase footfall for day and night economy.

Campaign for friendly evening parking at Gwydir Street Car Park and nearby streets, to also promote to traders to ensure pavement parking is minimised as much as possible.

Raise concerns about Petersfield congestion and Bike and Pedestrian safety from 4pm to 6pm

Explore with stakeholders how we can encourage more footfall from station and city centre.
5. A Safer, Cleaner Mill Road

Increase CCTV coverage and lighting for safety.

Partner with the Police Commissioner for stronger street presence and collaborations with the local officers.

Work with the Council to remove graffiti and improve cleanliness.

Open dialogue to Reopen public toilets to improve hygiene and deter antisocial behaviour.

Explore local partnerships with local groups to organise clean up events and utilise council schemes.
6. Celebrate Culture & Community

Create a permanent lighting infrastructure for Christmas, Diwali, Eid, Easter & more.

Partner with the Mill Road Winter Fair, Love Mill Road and organise new "Celebration Days", e.g Celebrate Women of Mill Road, Mill Road Summer Fair, Food Events.
7. Promote Mill Road Proudly

Launch a new MRTA website and strengthen social media.

Run “Meet the Trader” stories, social adverts, and radio features with local radio stations.

Establish a consistent Mill Road brand identity to attract visitors.

Launch a new Mill Road Decal for each member.
8. Go Green & Future-Ready

Support Cambridge 2030 emission targets through cleaner deliveries and greener practices.

Explore grants for solar panels, insulation, and electrification for traders.

Explore shopfront improvement funding for double-glazing and heritage repairs.

Collaborate with environmental and heritage partners to make Mill Road a model sustainable high street
9. Strengthen Partnerships

Build closer collaboration with Cambridge City Council and County council so Mill Road can be a showcase for the city.

Work alongside Love Mill Road, Cambridge Residents Association, CamCycle, and other local groups who share our goals.

Open dialogue and maintain with BID, local media, and community organisations.

Work with RailPen and Mill Yard to create positive relations and support for local community.

Work with CAMBAC to help manage crime on Mill Road.

Seek Main sponsor and support sponsors to help support MRTA to achieve vision.
10. Transparency & Accountability

Hold officer meetings, document minutes and hold board meetings min every 3 months and share clear updates.

Keep members informed through WhatsApp for quick updates but main will be via monthly newsletter sent via email and on the website, and through social media.
